Ant games that aren't colony sims: how Ant Zigzag plays

JoyBit Team ·

Search for "ant game" on Google Play and most of what comes back is about running a colony: digging tunnels, managing workers, idle upgrades, strategy maps. Ant Zigzag goes the other way. You control one ant, Kim, inside a small arena, and you win by ramming the back half of other ants.

It is a short-round action game, closer to an io-style arena than to a colony sim, and it plays fully offline. We are the team that makes Ant Zigzag, so read this as the developer explaining the game, not as a review. Below is how it actually plays, what changes over its 50 levels, and what it doesn't have.

What an "ant game" search turns up

When we checked the Google Play results for "ant game" in October 2026 (US store), the top of the list was colony builders, idle games and strategy games, with titles like Pocket Ants, Idle Ants, The Ants and Ant Legion. Those are full games with their own players, and if you want to build a nest they are the right place to look.

What we didn't see near the top was a single-player action game where you steer an ant yourself. That is the gap Ant Zigzag is made for.

The one rule: hit the tail, avoid the head

Kim never stops crawling. You touch and drag to steer, and until level 11 that is the whole control scheme, so you can play holding the phone in one hand. In a browser on a computer, the arrow keys or A and D steer.

A glancing bump at an angle doesn't end the round. Both ants bounce apart and the enemy is stunned for a moment, which is often the opening you need.

Each level is an arena match against a handful of ants. Some ask you to take them all down, others to hold out until the timer ends, collect sugar, or beat a boss. Most rounds last somewhere between 30 and 90 seconds. When you lose, you retry right away: there are no lives to run out of and no waiting.

Reading the enemy ants

Learning the enemies matters more than fast fingers.

Kim turns far more sharply than any of them, but isn't always the fastest ant in the arena. From the second land on, yellow ants are quicker than Kim, and by the Volcano red and purple ants are too (the Quick legs upgrade narrows the gap). The tight turn is what you can always count on, which is why the same plan works almost everywhere: swing wide, get behind, then cut in. Charging straight at an ant is the one move that never pays.

Two tools you unlock: Brake and Gold Rush

Brake (from level 11). While steering, tap with a second finger (or press S on a keyboard) and Kim stops short for half a second. An ant chasing your tail overshoots, and its tail ends up right in front of you. The brake needs a moment to recharge, so timing it is the skill.

Gold Rush (from level 21). Every takedown fills the Rage bar, and hits on a boss fill it faster. When it is full, tap the GOLD button (or press Space). For 4 seconds Kim glows gold, moves 30% faster, wins a hit anywhere on an enemy's body, can't be bitten and can cross lava. It is the move for crowded rounds and for finishing a boss.

Five lands, ten special levels, five bosses

The 50 levels are spread over five lands, and each arena is an everyday object blown up to ant size: the face of a pocket watch in the Sand Garden, a leaf and a bottle cap ring in the Leaf Forest, a porcelain bowl in the Sugar Nest, stone pillars in the Dark Cave, and a crater with lava pools in the Volcano. Enemies get a little faster in each new land.

Ten levels are made by hand, each with a rule of its own. A few of them:

There are five boss fights: Mun at level 20, the Pink Queen at 30, the Shadow Queen at 40, the Fire General at 45 and the Fire King at 50. Bosses take several hits, and when one is down to its last hit it gets faster. Mun doesn't stay an enemy. From level 41 to 49, Mun fights alongside Kim and hunts on its own. Bump into Mun and you are both stunned, so give each other room.

Stars, sugar and upgrades

Each level gives one to three stars, mostly based on how quickly you clear it, and some sugar. A loss still pays a little sugar, so a bad run is never wasted. Sugar buys upgrades for seven skills, among them Quick legs, Sharp turns, Sharp jaws, Hard shell and Keen antennae, and armor you can bring into a tough level. Sugar only comes from playing. There is nothing to buy.

Between lands there is a short story with eight characters, about Kim winning back the eggs, the sugar and five clock shards. It is in English and Vietnamese, and you can switch language on the title screen without losing progress.

Offline, no ads, and what it doesn't have

To be clear about what's missing: there is no online play, no playing with friends and no leaderboard. The app's start screen also shows a few tiles for other game ideas; those games aren't made yet and can't be played.

How to try it

Ant Zigzag: Kim Saga is free on Google Play for Android. You can also play the same game in your browser. On iPhone, open it in Safari and tap Share, then Add to Home Screen to keep it like an app; it works offline after the first visit (see the iPhone guide). On a computer, use the keyboard controls above.

If you came here looking for a colony builder, the games listed at the top are a better fit. If you wanted to steer one ant and outsmart the rest, give the first ten levels a go.
