Can you play slither.io offline? io games that work without internet

JoyBit Team ·

Short answer: the browser version of slither.io, no. It matches you with other players on a server, so it needs a connection the whole time. The Android app is a little different. Its Google Play listing is tagged both Multiplayer and Offline, and player reviews talk about an offline mode against computer-controlled snakes. That mode is a practice round, not the game you know from the browser, and you can check it yourself in two minutes.

The same is true of io games in general. The genre is built around a crowded online arena, so "offline io game" is a bit of a contradiction. What you can find offline is the io feel: a small arena, simple controls, rounds that end fast, and rivals that are bots instead of people. Below is how to tell which games actually give you that without a connection, and where our own game fits. We make Ant Zigzag, so read that part as the developer's account, not a review.

Why io games need a connection

An io game is basically one big room. Everyone in it sees the same snakes, cells or paper trails moving at the same time, and that only works if a server keeps track of all of them. The leaderboard in the corner is the server telling you how you rank against everyone else in the room right now.

When you lose the connection, the room is gone. Some apps then show an error, some drop you to the menu, and a few switch to a mode with bots. When we searched Google Play for "offline io game" and "io games offline" in October 2026, the top results were the big online io games themselves. So the store won't sort this out for you.

What offline modes in io games usually leave out

If an io game does have an offline or bot mode, expect a few differences:

None of that makes a bot mode bad. It's just a different thing from the online game, and worth knowing before a flight.

How to test any io game in airplane mode

This works for slither.io or any other io game on your phone:

  1. Open the game once on Wi-Fi, so anything it downloads on first launch is already there.
  2. Close it fully from the recent apps screen.
  3. Turn on airplane mode and make sure Wi-Fi stayed off.
  4. Open the game again. Look for an "offline" or "vs bots" option, or watch what happens when you press Play.
  5. Play a full round, then close and reopen the game to see that it kept your progress.

If you get to step 5 without an error, it plays offline. Our guide to games to play on a plane without Wi-Fi walks through the same test in more detail. If you're also watching your mobile data, offline games without Wi-Fi or data shows how to see what each game uses.

What to look for if you want the io feel offline

If what you like about io games is the quick, tense round in a small arena, a few things matter more than the "io" in the name:

Where Ant Zigzag fits

Ant Zigzag is an io-style arena game that was made to be played offline. You steer one ant, Kim, who never stops crawling, by touching and dragging with one finger. The rule is close to slither.io, but turned around:

So instead of cutting in front of others, you swing wide, get behind them and cut in.

The rivals are bots, and each kind behaves in its own way. Pink ants wander slowly. Red ants change direction often. Purple ants hunt your tail for a few seconds, then rest. Yellow ants are nearly as fast as Kim and turn around when you chase them too long. Armored ants need two hits. Enemies get a little faster in each new land.

Playing level 26 inside a porcelain bowl: Kim the green ant facing a red ant, with takedowns, time and score at the top

Instead of one endless room, there are 50 levels across 5 lands, each with its own arena: a pocket watch face, a leaf, a porcelain bowl, a dark cave, a volcano. Ten levels have a rule of their own, like a spinning watch hand or lights that go out every few seconds. There are 5 boss fights. From level 11 you can brake with a second finger, and from level 21 you can fill a bar for a short Gold Rush. Each level gives one to three stars and some sugar, which you spend on upgrades for seven skills.

What it doesn't have: no online play, no playing with friends and no leaderboard. If what you want from slither.io is beating real people, this isn't a replacement. If you want the arena and the close calls without a connection, it might be.

On the offline side, the game code makes no network requests. There are no ads, no in-app purchases, no sign-in and no tracking, and your progress is saved on your device. The full rundown of how it plays is in ant games that aren't colony sims.

How to try it

Ant Zigzag: Kim Saga is free on Google Play for Android. You can also play the same game in your browser. Open it once while online and it keeps working offline after that. On iPhone, the iPhone guide shows how to add it to your Home Screen.
