Games like Snake.io without ads, and ones that play offline

JoyBit Team ·

If you landed here, you probably like the Snake.io loop (steer, eat, grow, cut someone off) and you're tired of what happens between rounds. You're not alone. When we read a small sample of recent Google Play reviews of the big snake and worm games in October 2026, ads were the complaint we saw most often, and some came from people who had paid to remove them.

This page won't give you a ranked top 10. It shows how to check any snake game for ads and offline play before you install it, lists what the store pages of some well-known ones actually say, and explains where our own game fits. We make Ant Zigzag, so read that part as the developer's account, not a review.

What "like Snake.io" usually means

People mean different things by it, so it helps to pick one before you search:

Plenty of games give you the first one. If what you actually want is the second and third, you have more options, including games that aren't about snakes at all.

Check the ads label before you install

Every Google Play listing shows two small lines under the app name when they apply: Contains ads and In-app purchases. Google requires developers to declare ads, so if "Contains ads" is missing, the developer has said the app has none. It's the fastest filter you have. Our guide to games with no ads or in-app purchases walks through where those lines sit on the page and what to look for in reviews.

Two things the label doesn't tell you: how often ads appear, and whether a paid "remove ads" option removes all of them. For that, sort reviews by most recent and search them for "ads".

Check offline play in airplane mode

Many snake games say they play "online and offline". In practice that often means a mode with bots. To see what you get:

  1. Open the game once on Wi-Fi so it finishes any first-launch download.
  2. Close it fully, turn on airplane mode, and check that Wi-Fi is off too.
  3. Open it again and play a full round.
  4. Close and reopen it to make sure your progress stayed.

If ads normally load between rounds, watch what happens without a connection. Some games skip them, some stall. This also tells you whether the game will eat into your mobile data, which our post on offline games without Wi-Fi or data covers in more detail. What some snake and worm game listings say

We checked these Google Play pages on October 23, 2026 (US English store). Labels can change with updates, so check again before you install. "What it says about offline" quotes or sums up the developer's own description; we didn't test each game in airplane mode for this article.

A few takeaways, without picking a winner:

Searching in Indonesian? "Game cacing" brings up mostly the same worm games, so the same checks apply.

Where Ant Zigzag fits

Ant Zigzag is not a snake game. There's no eating and no growing. It's included here because it keeps the parts of Snake.io that are about the arena and the close call, without ads and without a connection.

You steer one ant, Kim, who never stops crawling, by touching and dragging with one finger. The rule is a twist on the snake one:

So the habit you build is the same one snake players know, getting around someone instead of meeting them face to face, just with the roles of head and tail swapped.

The rivals are bots with their own habits. Pink ants wander slowly, red ants change direction a lot, purple ants hunt your tail for a few seconds and then rest, yellow ants are nearly as fast as Kim and turn to face you if you line up on them for more than a moment, and armored ants take two hits. Enemies get a little faster in each new land.

Playing level 26 inside a porcelain bowl: Kim the green ant facing a red ant, with takedowns, time and score at the top

Instead of one endless arena, there are 50 levels across 5 lands and six arenas: a pocket watch face, a leaf, a bottle cap ring, a porcelain bowl, a stalactite cave and a volcano crater. Ten levels have a rule of their own, like a spinning watch hand or lights that go out. There are 5 boss fights. From level 11 you can brake with a second finger, and from level 21 you can fill a bar for a short Gold Rush. Stars and sugar from each level go into upgrades for seven skills. The beginner guide covers the first ten levels, and the six arenas of Ant Zigzag goes through each arena in turn.

What it doesn't have: no online matches and no playing with friends. Every rival is a bot on your own phone. If what keeps you in Snake.io is beating real people or growing the longest snake, this won't replace it.

On ads and offline: the Google Play listing has no "Contains ads" or "In-app purchases" line, every level plays with no connection at all, there's no sign-in, and progress is saved on your phone. That also means progress doesn't follow you to a new phone. The only online feature is an optional shared leaderboard that you turn on yourself.

How to try it

Ant Zigzag is free on Google Play for Android. You can also play the same game in your browser. Open it once while online and it keeps working offline after that. On iPhone, the iPhone guide shows how to add it to your Home Screen.
